Review: Grill Daddy

Hey fellow Tailgate Masters (and future fellow Tailgate Masters) you probably already know that we enjoy doing reviews from time to time. We thought we would take a look at the “Original Grill Daddy” grilling brush and see if it actually could live up to the “as seen on TV” hype, or is it just one of those things that people buy because they are coming off an all night bender because their favorite team lost and in a moment of weakness, see an ad and make a purchase at three o’clock in the morning. 😉

The Grill Daddy cleaning brush comes in many shapes and sizes but this particular review is on the “Classic” Grill Daddy (as pictured). The “working end” has a repetitively standard set of metal brushes that work quite well when cleaning your grill.

What is unique is the plastic handle which houses a reservoir for water, which allows the user to release a stream of water on the brush end, while scrubbing. Note that the brush itself does not heated. The water from the original Grill Daddy hits your hot grill grates which produces the steam.

Highlights from the Manufacturer

• The body is made from high-temperature heat-resistant ABS plastic which is approved by the National Safety Foundation (NSF) for use with potable water and the bristles are made with stainless steel bristles
• Made to clean small grills and is perfect for tailgating
• Steam cleans your grill using the water in the reservoir which is fed by gravity (no chemicals or batteries needed)
• Safe to use on stainless steel, ceramic and iron grill grates
• Removable and replaceable grill brushes

Simply preheat the grill, then with the water valve in the off position, fill the Grill Daddy with water, turn the water valve to on, and start to brush away caked-on food residue and grease. The brush releases a measured amount of water as you clean, which turns to steam when it hits the grill and rinses away burnt-on food and dirt. For more steam, loosen the fill cap. For hard-to-clean areas, flip the brush over to release just the right amount of water.

We first tested it out on a grill that had been sitting for a couple of weeks and had not been cleaned when it was last used. Our results were middle of the road. The Grill Daddy did not really do better or worse than a regular brush when trying to remove this hardened material. It did clean up a good bit of it, but still left residue on the grill grates. It is easy to regulate water flow by using your thumb over the hole on the water intake area (barely visible in the photo above).

Flipping the tool over and using the larger brushes on the Scraper side seamed to fair better on the hard to reach places.

Where the Grill Daddy really shined was using on a brand new grill. I am certain that if you used it every-time, right after you finish cooking, your grill would remain shiny and looking like new for a long time.

What We Really Liked

• Easy to use
• No battery to worry about
• Works great right after you finish cooking
• Pretty cool as a gift

What We Didn’t Like So Much:

• Handle was kind of short (hot grill)
• Very Small opening for adding water

Final Thoughts:

I personally would like a longer handle (they do have that feature with the Grill Daddy Pro) just to keep my hands further away from the grill when cleaning. For the money (under $20 at the time of this review) this is nifty little tool. I could definitely see giving one as a gift.
